Montgomery County, MD (April 4, 2024) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its selection of the Coalition for Green Capital (CGC) for an award of $5 billion from the National Clean Investment Fund (NCIF), pursuant to a competition conducted under the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. Under this momentous grant, the Maryland Coalition of Green Banks, a collaborative effort between the Montgomery County Green Bank (MCGB), Maryland Clean Energy Center (MCEC), and Climate Access Fund (CAF), will be able to leverage the CGC award into impact for Maryland.
“We are honored to be selected as a sub-awardee under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. With these grant funds, we are excited to amplify climate and equity impacts in Montgomery County, as well as with our partners throughout Maryland. Together, Maryland will make significant strides in decarbonizing buildings, expanding clean energy, and propelling zero-emissions transportation. And together we will grow the clean energy economy for all, with a focus on our disadvantaged communities.” – Stephen Morel, Montgomery County Green Bank CEO
The Maryland Coalition of Green Banks will use funding to invest in clean energy throughout Maryland with at least 50% of investments in low-income and disadvantaged communities. Funding for programming is anticipated to be used in three key areas:
- Building decarbonization
- Distributed clean energy
- Electric vehicle adoption
These programs will be deployed with a large focus on benefiting low income and disadvantaged communities in order to promote a just transition to a clean economy.
The collaboration between the Maryland Coalition of Green Banks and CGC has been instrumental in driving forward the accessibility and affordability of clean energy and climate-resilient solutions for all. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Maryland, and MCGB is proud to join forces with MCEC and CAF in expediting an inclusive transition towards a clean energy future.
