Housing Unlimited leverages clean energy to reinvest over $500,000 in net savings over the next 25 years into community-based recovery and housing stability for 260+ adults.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD – May 13, 2026 – Yesterday, at Housing Unlimited’s annual Welcome Home event, RE-volv, Montgomery County Green Bank, and GreenBrilliance helped celebrate the solarization of over 40 townhomes across the county. With the majority of the solar installations already live and producing power, the completed initiative will account for more than 270 kW of clean energy capacity installed. The project is projected to generate over $500,000 in electricity bill savings over the life of the systems and avoid over 5,000 tons of carbon emissions.
The project was financed and developed by RE-volv and Montgomery County Green Bank and installed by GreenBrilliance. Through RE-volv’s zero-down solar financing model, Housing Unlimited pays for the clean power generated at a rate significantly lower than standard utility costs. After these monthly payments, Housing Unlimited is projected to keep over $500,000 in net lifetime savings, which will be reinvested directly into their mission.
The Welcome Home event brought together 300+ local leaders, businesses, and community members to learn about the organization’s mission, using the new solar initiative as a featured example of how community-based partnerships can drive long-term impact.
Currently, Housing Unlimited owns 96 scattered-site homes in Montgomery County, providing shared housing to 263 adults in mental health recovery. Staff members visit each home weekly to build reliable, trusting relationships with tenants. The transition to solar ensures that more of the organization’s budget is dedicated to these critical, personalized services rather than utility costs.
“Housing Unlimited is excited to install solar at our homes,” said Abe Schuchman, CEO at Housing Unlimited. “This enables us to redirect energy bill savings into expanding our team and adding more homes. With a secure home and desired supports, the adults we serve can focus entirely on their independence and recovery.”
“Montgomery County Green Bank’s mission is to accelerate local clean energy adoption while advancing equity,” said Stephen Morel, CEO of Montgomery County Green Bank. “This project achieves both: pairing public-purpose capital with innovative partners to deliver real savings where it matters most.”
This solar initiative was made possible in part by Billie Eilish’s Changemaker Program, which provided a grant to RE-volv via REVERB, helping to accelerate clean energy adoption for community-serving organizations.
“Housing Unlimited’s incredible mission at the intersection of mental health and housing is now strengthened through solar power, thanks to lower energy bills that allow precious resources to be better utilized serving clients,” said Andreas Karelas, Executive Director of RE-volv. “RE-volv is thrilled to play a role in this incredible project, alongside our longstanding partners Montgomery County Green Bank, and Green Brilliance.”
“GreenBrilliance is proud to serve as the design and installation partner for this solar initiative,” said Nishanth ‘Neo’ Mahankali, Senior Mechanical Engineer at GreenBrilliance. “Our mission is to provide nonprofits with high-performance, turnkey solar solutions that deliver immediate savings. Seeing our systems support mental health recovery and housing stability in Montgomery County is exactly why we do this work.”
