DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, February 4 at 7:30PM.\nCouncilmember Evan Glass\, MoCo Green Bank CEO Stephen Morel and others will share their views on the BEPS regulations that the County Council will vote on in February. Learn what YOU can do to ensure the councilmembers vote YES\, making our apartment buildings\, condos\, offices\, and other buildings healthier\, safer\, and more affordable! \nBuildings covered by these regulations produce nearly 25% of MoCo greenhouse gas emissions. The County Council is now reviewing and will vote whether to approve the regulations needed to implement the Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) Law that was passed in 2022\, requiring buildings to become more energy efficient.\nThe efficiency requirements will require most buildings to convert from gas to electricity\, since heat pump space and water heating are 3-4 times more efficient than burning fossil fuels. This will \n\nreduce energy bills\nimprove safety and public health\nsignificantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions\n\nThis benefits everyone in the county\, not just the residents and workers in those buildings. \nClick on the “Register on Zoom” button and join us at the TCM webinar on Tuesday\, February 4 at 7:30pm where we will learn about BEPS and how it can help us – but only if the County approves the regulations. This is the official\, public presentation of their findings and recommendations. \n​This is a critical discussion for those who like to have reliable drinking water. \n​The U.S. is facing a serious and unprecedented groundwater challenge. Across the U.S.\, groundwater withdrawal has outpaced natural recharge\, while slow natural recharge has been exacerbated by climate change and precipitation variability\, including floods\, droughts\, and early snowmelt. Groundwater is a critical resource for agriculture\, domestic manufacturing\, construction\, mining\, energy production\, and other uses. \n​The largest use of groundwater\, at 70%\, is for irrigation. Moreover\, groundwater supplies drinking water for half the U.S. population and nearly all the rural population. Sustaining and securing groundwater is thus central to our Nation’s health\, food\, water\, and energy security\, and economy. Adding to the challenge\, much of the water in the major aquifers in the U.S. is fossil water\, meaning it was last recharged over 10\,000 years ago and will not be replaced naturally in centuries and millennia. In the western U.S.\, groundwater resources are being depleted at alarming rates. \n​The depletion has caused land subsidence and earth fissures as well as permanent reduction of storage capacity due to inelastic compaction of the subsurface formation.
