SUMMARY:Aquifers - Threats and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion on Groundwater/Aquifer Threats and Solutions by members of the Presidents Council of Science and Technology. This is the official\, public presentation of their findings and recommendations. \nThis is a critical discussion for those who like to have reliable drinking water. \nThe U.S. is facing a serious and unprecedented groundwater challenge. Across the U.S.\, groundwater withdrawal has outpaced natural recharge\, while slow natural recharge has been exacerbated by climate change and precipitation variability\, including floods\, droughts\, and early snowmelt. Groundwater is a critical resource for agriculture\, domestic manufacturing\, construction\, mining\, energy production\, and other uses. \nThe largest use of groundwater\, at 70%\, is for irrigation. Moreover\, groundwater supplies drinking water for half the U.S. population and nearly all the rural population. Sustaining and securing groundwater is thus central to our Nation’s health\, food\, water\, and energy security\, and economy. Adding to the challenge\, much of the water in the major aquifers in the U.S. is fossil water\, meaning it was last recharged over 10\,000 years ago and will not be replaced naturally in centuries and millennia. In the western U.S.\, groundwater resources are being depleted at alarming rates. \nThe depletion has caused land subsidence and earth fissures as well as permanent reduction of storage capacity due to inelastic compaction of the subsurface formation.

SUMMARY:34th Annual Affordable Housing Summit
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our 34th annual Affordable Housing Summit. “The Future of Affordable Housing: Weathering the Storm”. \nLast year’s summit attracted over 600 concerned professionals and citizens\, including community and business leaders\, housing experts\, and activists and this year’s summit promises to be equally enriching. Through diverse panels and open discussion\, we will distill the best ways to fight for continued improvements in access to affordable housing for low-and moderate-income households. \nAlongside our panel discussions\, we also feature initiatives that directly support homebuyers and promote housing accessibility. Our “Breaking the Barrier to Homeownership” contest allows first-time homebuyers to receive closing cost assistance for their first home purchase. Since 2001\, AHCMC and our sponsors have provided over $400\,000 in support to more than 40 moderate-income individuals and families through this grant program. \nTo further enrich our conference activities each year\, we have been fortunate to host a variety of leaders from HUD and local government\, who have played a key role in shaping our discussions. In years past\, we have had the distinct privilege of hosting former HUD Secretaries and officials who have shared their insights on the housing crisis and its impact on our community. Their expertise has helped drive important conversations and deepen our understanding of the challenges and opportunities in affordable housing. \n

SUMMARY:Resilience as an Asset Class: The Role of Local Climate Finance in Housing and Community Investment.
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Montgomery County Green Bank’s Resilience Financing Program\, Protecting the Path to Net-Zero (PPNZ) \nAs climate impacts intensify\, federal resilience funding remains insufficient\, leaving billions in unmet resilience needs. Local green banks and CDFIs are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between community needs and private capital — but they require a model that works at the community scale while attracting sustained private investment. \nMontgomery County’s Protecting the Path to Net-Zero initiative demonstrates how a localized approach can de-risk investments and deliver measurable resilience ROI. \nDuring New York Climate Week\, join the Montgomery County Green Bank and technical partners PRE Collective\, AEI Consultants\, and Quantified Ventures for an in-depth look at PPNZ — a groundbreaking financing model that aligns private capital with scalable resilience strategies for housing and communities. This session will unveil a first-of-its-kind financial tool\, paired with a comprehensive technical framework\, to unlock catalytic capital for climate risk management\, water stewardship\, and health-focused housing improvements. From reduced operating costs to long-term savings through proactive resilience planning\, PPNZ illustrates how strategic investment—guided by standardized tools like the ASTM Property Resilience Assessment (PRA)—can unlock measurable value and risk-adjusted returns.
